Not all dance vinyl is created equal, and plenty of it is not suited to dancers at all. STM has tried, tested, supplied and installed a wide range over two decades, and ships the products that earned a place in the range to New Zealand.

Tarkett and Marley have become generic names for dance vinyl. In practice there are many products with real differences in grip, weight, thickness and suitability for hard-shoe styles. These are the ones STM recommends.

Offcuts and short lengths
Small floors for home practice.
STM keeps a limited and variable number of short lengths of vinyl. They are ideal for a small studio, a home practice corner or a portable surface for a small area, and they ship to New Zealand by courier. Tell us the area you want to cover and we will tell you what is available now.
Freight to New Zealand
Rolls are long and heavy. We plan for that.
Full rolls travel upright or on a core and are best moved by seafreight. Our quote form asks whether you have a forklift or loading dock and whether you would like a seafreight quote, because those two answers change the freight price more than anything else. Joining tape, double-sided tape and floor cleaners ship in the same consignment.

What is dance vinyl flooring?
A specialist performance flooring surface for dance studios, stages, rehearsal rooms and performance spaces. Unlike standard domestic vinyl, dance vinyl is selected for controlled grip, slip resistance, durability, ease of cleaning and suitability for particular dance styles. The right product depends on how the floor will be used, the footwear worn, the underlying floor construction and whether the vinyl is permanent or portable.
Which dance vinyl is best for my studio?
There is no single best product. It depends on the styles taught, the footwear (ballet shoes, jazz shoes, tap shoes, heels or sneakers), the level of traffic, whether the floor is permanent or portable, the subfloor, the preferred colour and the budget. Tap, flamenco, ballroom, commercial dance and heels need extra consideration. Tell us the styles and footwear and we will recommend a product.
Can dance vinyl be laid directly on concrete?
No. STM does not recommend supplying or installing dance vinyl directly onto a concrete slab and will not sell vinyl for that purpose. Concrete has no resilience or shock absorption. A sprung floor, batten floor or other suitable underfloor system should be in place first. See our DIY sprung floor kit.
Can dance vinyl go over a timber floor?
Yes, provided the floor is structurally sound, smooth, level, clean and suited to the installation method. Floorboards, joints, fasteners and damaged areas may need repair or covering with an underlay or flooring substrate. Send photos and we will advise.
How much dance vinyl do I need?
More than the room’s square metres. Roll width, room shape, alcoves, columns, doorways, seam direction and installation wastage all matter. For an accurate quote send the room length and width, a floor plan where available, photos of the existing floor, the position of doors and columns, the dance styles, your preferred product or colour, and whether the floor is permanent or portable. We will prepare a roll layout and material allowance.
How are seams joined?
Portable floors are joined with an appropriate dance floor tape. Permanent installations may need a manufacturer-approved adhesive, welding method or seam treatment. General-purpose tapes and adhesives should not be used without confirming compatibility, as they can leave residue or damage the vinyl. STM supplies the right tapes and adhesives with the vinyl.
How should vinyl be stored and cleaned?
Store rolls upright or on a core, never lying flat under weight, or they crease permanently. Sweep or dust mop daily, wash weekly with a pH-neutral dance floor cleaner such as Sadie Suds, rinse and dry. Avoid household polishes, waxes, oils and solvents.
