Empowering the Dance Community: STM Studio Supplies in Action

At STM Studio Supplies, we’re deeply involved in the world of performing arts, from professional companies to local dance schools. Our passion for supporting this creative community extends to both Australia and New Zealand, where we’re proud members of Danz Aotearoa, the leading organization for dance in New Zealand.

In a recent issue of their quarterly magazine (Issue 53, Spring 2018), I came across an insightful article by Lauren Sanderson, “Taking The ‘Dis’ Out of Disability”. This piece really resonated with me due to my own experience in performance, teaching, and Dance Movement Therapy.

Dance as a Vehicle for Social Change

Lauren Sanderson highlights how dance can empower individuals who face barriers to self-expression through other means. As she eloquently puts it:

“It has the ability to transcend barriers and become a vehicle for social change.”

New Zealand’s dance community reflects this beautifully, ensuring inclusivity in dance for everyone, regardless of ability. The article explores interviews with the Artistic Directors of three remarkable dance entities focused on providing opportunities for dancers who might face challenges in mainstream settings:

Each of these organizations is dedicated to creating accessible and inclusive spaces for dancers of all abilities.

Cultivating a Culture of Respect and Openness

One standout quote from Lyn Cotton, Artistic Director of Jolt, beautifully encapsulates the philosophy of inclusivity in dance:

“Accessibility is more than physical support; it is a culture of mutual respect and openness where teacher, director, choreographer, and dancer are willing to engage and be shaped by their interactions with each other.”

This sentiment perfectly captures the spirit of what dance can be—a universal language that communicates emotions, ideas, celebration, and exploration of the human condition. It’s a movement available to everyone.

Supporting Inclusivity: STM Studio Supplies and Higher Spaces Collaboration

At STM Studio Supplies, we’re always looking for ways to support these vital initiatives. Recently, we collaborated with Higher Spaces, providing them with Mylar rollaway mirrors. When one of the panels didn’t meet their requirements, we saw an opportunity to give back. Together, we arranged a donation of the panel to e.motion21, an Australian organization that empowers individuals with Down syndrome through dance and fitness programs.

A special thanks to Josephine at Higher Spaces and Jane at e.motion21 for helping make this possible!

We’re eagerly awaiting photos of the dancers using their new mirror and celebrating the freedom of movement it reflects!

Join the Movement

At STM Studio Supplies, we’re inspired by the incredible work of organizations like Jolt, Everybody Cool Lives Here, GASP Dance, and e.motion21. Dance is for everyone, and we’re proud to support initiatives that make this art form accessible to all.
